In Oct last year Focus Foundation approved one of its first grants to a charity called Bristol Association for Neighbourhood Daycare (BAND) .
The grant was to be used to fund Children's Resilience and Mental Health training courses for professionals who work closely with children. The aim of these courses was to provide information on how to ensure the good mental health of children, and how to teach them coping mechanisms for the ups and downs of life, so that they may reach their full potential.
The courses were attended by 29 trainees who work in local nurseries, after school clubs, youth clubs, preschools and playschemes.
Below are some of the thoughts of those who attended: - * When asked what the best part of the course was it was agreed that the section covering emotional coaching was very useful and informative. * Attendees felt that having the opportunity to learn and reflect on what influences young children's mental health and resilience was useful to them and would allow them to better support children and families who are struggling. * Attendees felt that being able to identify potential mental health issues was very helpful, and they felt empowered with clear strategies for supporting children. * Attendees came away with new ideas on how to put their knowledge into practice for the benefit of the children they work with.
Bristol Association for Neighbourhood Daycare (BAND) estimates that the impact of this course will benefit at least 870 children.
